There is a tendency to overestimate the reliability and the integrity of the Internet, particularly with regard to things like time stamps and return receipts. The fact of the matter is, unless you have control over every point between sender and recipient, such as on a LAN, you can’t assume that date/time info is being handled correctly. It usually is. But you can’t guarantee that. It’s like the addresses in email. All of that stuff is alterable, very easily, either on purpose, or accidently due to a misconfiguration, or software/firmware bug.
Unless every message you get is digitally signed, from a source with a verifiable certificate authority, any and all of that information can be quite different than what was sent. It’s normally not a problem, but “normally not a problem” is not the same as “reliable and trustworthy” and should not be assumed to be the same.
