That's the version I'm using with Panther.

Maybe you have a problem with the preferences?

Quit the app. Go to ~/Library/Preferences and delete the
com.apple.scripteditor2.plist (or move it somewhere else if you want to
check over the XML later). Start Script Editor again and hopefully it'll
work properly.
