That did it. I rebooted into OSX, searched for the printer's names and found
them. I deleted all of them (with intentions of remaking them in OS9), and
rebooted into OS9.

Lo and behold, the printer that Desktop Printer Utility said was already
there but wasn't showing up anywhere (neither desktop nor search engine nor
anything showed it!) magically appeared!

So whatever the rebooting into one OS and then the other did, it worked.

(Adds another entry into "Strange But True" chapter of thin gs that happened
on my Macs I'd swear in a court of law could *never* happen.)
