It's all my fault, but I did it that way so applications could implement "set clipboard to foo" themselves.

No mea culpa necessary. I should have thought of 'the clipboad'. As it happens, I'm just happy as a clam that I've got a viable workaround for c2g's recalitrance regarding filenames.
