Picture file to clipboard w/shell?

Is there any way to get a picture file onto the clibboard *as a picture*
using a shell command? Pbcopy doesn¹t do it. I'm imagining something like
this but of course with syntax that actually works.
Pbcopy < ~/desktop/myfile.jpg
