Not only are the time-honoured vanilla AS methods of < path to preferences > or < path to "pref" > simpler than some of the suggested alternatives, but they're substantially faster, too.

Even if a UNIX-type path is required, < POSIX path of (path to preferences) > is faster (and probably more reliable) than something like < (do shell script "printenv HOME") & "/Library/Preferences/" >.

There may be times that a 'do shell script...' can beat the pants off native AS. IMHO, this ain't one of them. :-)
