I think those Unicode people have done a good job, and for them ä is LATIN SMALL LETTER A WITH DIAERESIS, and å is LATIN SMALL LETTER A WITH RING ABOVE, which I find is usefully descriptive.


And what we used to call eszett is now LATIN SMALL LETTER SHARP S. Maybe less elitist, finally.
