I used your:
mount volume afp://dnsnameofserver/sharename as user name "foo" with password "bar"

But to get it to work, I had to change dnsnameofserver to the 000.000.0.00 address form--
mount volume afp://000.000.0.00/sharename as user name "foo" with
password "bar"


I am now sitting at home logged onto the network with VPN and happily mounting volumes getting three scripts finished and ready for Monday morning.
