I don't think scripting in general is arcane, but in this instance it
sure is...
First, how do I get a layer mask of a layer?
I don't think you can.
Ouch. Ok, then I can use a one-step action to load the layer mask of
the current layer into a selection... which I believe I can use.
Since there's a load selection, but not a save selection, command in
the object model, is it possible to use this to copy a selection over?
Try it. There's no need to have a save selection; the selection loaded
is, well, the selection.
Save Selection in Photoshop is the opposite of Load Selection - it
takes the current selection and dumps it into an alpha channel, mask,
or layer mask. I suppose if I knew how to address layer masks I could
simply take the selection into a new layer mask and fill it, giving me
the same results.
Otherwise, what's the fastest way to transfer a selection from one
document to another (specifically, from a layer mask in one document
to
a layer mask in another)?
I'm afraid I get lost with layer masks. But if nothing else works,
install the Listener plug-in and let PS write it in javascript for you.
That was one of the first things I tried... the JavaScript it dumped
out was so bloated and arcane it made me long for something simple,
like writing a regex implementation in vanilla AppleScript.
I suppose I'll dig into the JavaScript API docs next... still hoping
for some verification from anyone who lives breathes the AppleScript
object model in Photoshop CS.
Thanks for the, ummm, encouragement! :)
