Hi Paul,
Thanks for posting.
Looking at the dictionary would be the Smart thing to do. Wouldn't it?
Your tip of detecting Os version and alerting the user is the best thing to do.
I think if I want to write scripts that will run in Jaguar, I first need to have a partition with it in my Mac, and build the scripts from it.
Question:
How do you guys work?
Do you guys have Macs with Panther, Jaguar, and older systems for building your scripts? or just prefer to detecting the Os version and displaying a message that the user need a newer system?
I would appreciate very much to read your approach on this subject.
I have two large hard drives, with 4 partitions in all. I keep the current OS 10.3.x on my main partition, Jaguar 10.2.8 on one of the other partitions, and a Tiger beta on a third. I boot into the other two when I need to test. On all partitions I have extra Test user accounts where I can test things without my personal settings (I keep all sorts of stuff on the 4th partition, symlinked to my regular user folder, which is not exactly standard) and can make more as needed. I can also test in non-admin users that way - and also in fresh admin users. OS X's rigorous multiple user environment is really good for testing: you don't really need to have a separate "testing" machine, as I suppose was necessary to do a good job back in Classic days. There's a remarkable amount of stuff that works fine in both 10.2 and 10.3, but some things do evolve and need to be checked. System Events is certainly one of the biggest developing areas. You should check the AppleScript Release Notes (start out from <http://www.apple.com/applescript/ > and look for Release Notes) so see what's been changed along the way.
