Has anyone developed a workaround for this problem? Maybe you have developed a better way to present debug messages to yourself?

I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts.

You may want to consider giving a try with yet another free script editor, Smile, by Satimage-software.

Smile implements - in addition to the "log" command - more commands intended for presenting debug messages and tracking execution. If you are interested, I invite you to visit the page about that at:
<http://www.satimage-software.com/en/tracking.html>. That page proposes an example with an "import script" button: use the button only if you have installed Smile.

If you browse a little, you will also find commands for pausing the execution, which is something convenient, too.
