I was trying to upload files to ftp server through the script below. It was running

I know it is not due to firewall or proxy settings and that server can be connected
by fetch (or any ftp tool).

Can I ask how you know that "it is not due to firewall or proxy settings"? Are you basing this on the fact that Fetch and other FTP apps work OK? If so, please go and read up on passive and (active) FTP.

The remote server you're connecting to - do you connect using passive FTP? If not, take a look at curl's --ftpport switch.
