Whups!  Sorry to have misinformed the OP.  Guess I'm not up on all of my bashisms.   I still have to use ksh88 on some systems, so I tend to rely on things that work in both (although with arrays there's no getting around the differences.  Good to know about ${x:m:n}.

I still think the affix-removal syntax is more generally useful, though. :)
