It's a labor of love but you can use perl to make a socket level connection to port 25 on a host acting as an SMTP server and to perform the whole SMTP protocol yourself. It's actually not that difficult after you get through the learning curve.
The problem is that you'll have to be allowed to do it by the host. In these days of spam the hosts get restricted in a variety of ways including blocking port 25 to non-local users.
