To save us all from facing the possibility of being caught in the crossfire,
should Hamish and Paul ever decide to "keep it real" and beat all hell out
of each other with old copies (are there any other?) of the ASLG, I think it
best -- a service to us all -- to use the correct terminology, even if Apple
does not, and to point to the differences if their terminology is
unchanging.
"I get a little nervous departing from [the ASLG] because people are used to
it" is a diplomatic way honoring other people's work, Matt. But, continuing
to rely on the ASLG, in its present form, can be far more confusing than
living without any knowledge of the ASLG at all -- thanks to AS:TDG, that
is. The ASLG wasn't _bad_, per se. It's just a dead document, now, and
even if some have a 'security blanket' attachment to it, well, those folks
will look pretty funny on the first day of kindergarten when they show up
with their ratty old ASLG.
Harmonizing language across multiple sources is only a service to
readers-of-terms if all the sources are accurate. The ASLG could _almost_
be put to death these days. Firstly, it bears less and less resemblance to
the current version of AppleScript. Secondly, your own book has broadened
the knowledgebase and has given us a more modern resource. (Whether it's
Danny G. history-making, only time will tell. His books are much thicker,
so there's that against you. ;)
Keep doing what I read that you are doing: Point out conflicts,
differences, wrong-nesses and then give us the skinny -- we'll keep giving
you the cashola.
