I don't believe so -- I think selection only works with document 1.
But, usage "selection of document2" can have been done with
Illustrator CS(11) and Illustrator 10.
and, selection is property of document class.

It's documented in the dictionary as "The selection of the front-most
window", so technically it's working as advertised. But it does seem a bit
of an oversight.
Certainly, it is being written on page 61 of 'AppleScript Scripting
Reference' of Illustrator CS2(PDF). Though is not being written in
the document class.
muuu... Did the specification change?
