I use SE only for looking at dictionaries and for testing to make sure
scripts are running as I expect, outside of the Smile.

Ditto for me. I really like the new dictionary browser in Script Editor 2 so that's what I use it most for. Smile is fantastic for development because you can easily execute line-by-line, within a tell context as Gary pointed out, and with persistent variables.


The commercial option is the excellent Script Debugger.
