What exactly is unclear about the Standard Additions dictionary for "mount
volume"? (I don't have a running OS 9 box available here, but I seem to
remember that that was what it was called all along.)

Exactly which format and exactly how does it not work?

The way I remember it, the syntax is really the same whether on Mac OS X or
Mac OS pre-X. Differences are mostly about which network protocol to use.
(afp. smb, eppc, etc.).

It can also matter which version of OS X the server is running. Tiger doesn't
do plain AppleShare anymore, only over IP, which means the OS 9 box will need
to have that enabled too. (And pre Mac OS 9 won't do that out of the box.)
