This kind of thing (a sudden burst of speed) really can cause problems. My
favorite example (stop me if you've heard this one) is what happened with
UserLand Frontier. One day a few users started reporting that it had stopped
working (it was crashing on startup). More and more users trickled in,
reporting the same thing.
What they all had in common is that they had upgraded to a new machine. (I
forget what it was: the Quadra, maybe, or some sort of new PowerPC.) As
Frontier starts up, it runs a timing test so that it can regulate the speed
of its animations (so that they will be the same speed on every computer).
It turned out that the integer in which the result of this test was being
recorded did not have enough bytes to record the number of ticks (or
whatever) that were elapsing during the test. When Frontier was originally
written, no one had imagined that that many bytes would *ever* be needed -
they figured computers would never be that fast.
