Finder Preferences

Two questions:

1) I can't seem to set the new window target in the Finder preferences. The dictionary doesn't say that it's read only and yet everything that I try gives me an error. Does anyone know how to set it to the startup disk? Or to some other directory?

2) Anyone know how to turn on/off the siderbar items? Specifically: the Computer, iDisk, Network and Connected Servers... I'd like to make them disappear...
