Quick way to check network connection

Is there a quick way in OS Tiger to check that the computer is connected to a network... Something along the lines of knowing the Ethernet port is active and has an IP address...

Right now I do it by attempting to mount a volume but that can take a few seconds. And since I need to do this test at various points in the script, it's eating up a lot of time.

Was hoping there was a system preference I could quickly check.

Thanks.
