run app hidden on remote machine, possible?

Hi folks!
I have a script that creates events on remote machine's iCals.
that works fine if only (as known) iCal on the remote host is already running.
I have no problem starting iCal remotely, but is there a way to avoid coming to frontmost while starting? Something like "without frontmost" (which in fact compiles and runs, but doesn't work...
I hope, this question could be answered without script snippets for my worked out thing is too complex to cut down to the necessary for testing here in the list.
btw: I start the app by "open item" as the only way to start I could figure out -- is there a maybe a better way?
