I'm just making a guess here, but wouldn't a kind of progress report for the terminal command 'burn' be provided if you embedded the 'do
shell script "drutil -drive 1 burn" ' command in Automator?

Sounds interesting. Before trying this, I tried burning via Disk Utility only to find that ALL blank media I tried (CD-R. CD-RW, DVD-R) were unwritable. All those experiments with drutil and hdiutil must have damaged something. I CAN burn from a Burn Folder, however, so perhaps it's not a hardware problem, but I can no longer burn using Disk Utility. Until I can find and fix the problem, I am not going to experiment with burning via a shell script.

Yesterday, I downloaded and looked at about half-a-dozen "burn" applications. None of them would burn a sparseimage file. One of them, which looked very nice, would burn .dmg files, but it also used 'hdiutil' and failed with a crash similar to my results.

Until I know more ... burn via hdiutil or drutil is DANGEROUS.
