I guess that the ampersand indicates that we aren't dealing with files but
with some kind of I/O stream.
You can test this by dispensing with the "1" & "2" altogether :-)
So you can redirect both stdout:
ls >& testfile
And stderror
kill blah >& testfile
There are probably good reasons not to do this, but I've used it with CRON
jobs for years without a problem... I think...
