Toyviewer is my fav. Its small and fast, it allows for all sorts of
transformation. It never alters the original. It always produces a
copy. It supports the four basic actions, though it doesn't have an
applescript dictionary.
This works on my machine:
tell application "ToyViewer" to open {alias "Macintosh
HD:Users:creator:Pictures:blueGrid.gif", alias "Macintosh
HD:Users:creator:Pictures:blueGrid2.gif"}
