Restoring a user account...

I'm not 100% sure this is even a scripting question, but AppleScript might be at least part of the solution.

Having recently had to do an Archive and Restore on a hard disk, I have several old user accounts. These have names and user numbers that are different than the newly created (I was unable to create the same user name, probably due to errors on the disk).

Is there an automated way to take an old user account and switch it over to one of the new accounts, keeping all the permissions to the right settings?
