Sounds like you need to start thinking outside of the box. The filenames don't all need to be listed on the command line.

Why not iterate through the list of filenames using a loop. This can be done easily either in AppleScript or the shell as well as in most other programming languages (perl, python, etc.).

Instead of being so negative about what you can or can't do, try posting your code with a request for info on how to improve it? If you don't know how to accomplish something, ask how to or if you can. Don't just assume you can't.
