Well, I wasn't trying to put down any other way of doing things (and other
people posted some good points about Unicode, which I also didn't blog
about). I wrote that post so I'd remember something I did to make my life a
little easier.
However, in the environment where I work, I can't always have extra osaxen
installed -- yet sed/awk/perl/python *are* already there, so it's simply
easier to work with them out of the box. For me. YMMV.
I feel that every time an osax is required, it increases the load on me as a
system administrator. It's another package to install, secure, and maintain
over time. (Apple's basically doing that work for me by bundling
sed/awk/perl/python, and I'm hip with that.)
For my own workstation, this might be okay. Even there, though, I'm getting
to the point where I'd rather not have to install lots of additional apps
and customizations just to get up and running. Granted, if it's something
that we *do* bundle into our standard loadset for a computer, the effort is
lessened due to economies of scale ... but there's upfront work that needs
to be done for that, and ongoing maintenance.
HTH, at least in explaining my perspective. :)
