Actually, there *is* a command line tool for OCR that will run on Mac OS X. If you do a search over at sourceforge.net, you'll see there's one listed called 'gocr' (current version 0.39-11). There's more information and examples of output at the developer's Web site here: <http://jocr.sourceforge.net/index.html>. I tested it on a scan of some business cards and get about 80% accuracy (not very good) if the scan is of reasonable clarity and unskewed. It can handle tiff images, but converts them to .pbm format before doing the actual OCR. Of course, you'll need the Developers' Tools to compile the thing. Can't hurt to try, I suppose. . .
