It's possible to use one of the mount cli commands to mount a file system somewhere else than under /Volumes/. You do have to create the directory at which the mount point will be before you issue the mount command

Finder does list Network in the left pane of its iconic windows along with the real volumes.

And a volume does not have to be a disk. A partition? A flash RAM? A tape? A soup?
