While desperately seeking 7 it became possible to write a background printer driver that could get, by a high level event, a trigger when a print file was dropped into a folder. At least one laserwriter manufacturer took advantage of it to operate a SCSI printer which was open to the AppleTalk network. You just dropped the print image into the appropriate folder on the server.
Now if the question was "when did AppleScript catch up to the system events ?". . . .zzz
