You don't HAVE to know any shell scripting to be able to create
AppleScripts in OS X. However, there are many things that are a lot
quicker and simpler (believe it or not!) if you do. I'm no UNIX expert,
but I found this site very useful;

Personally, I scripted under OS 9 and also OS X. In my opinion, there's
no contest - OS X beats OS 9 every time (it'd be kind of worrying if it
didn't!). So good luck with the migration.
