Getting directory path

Hi,

I have a series of newbie questions concerning path and directory navigation.

Let's say I have the following path "HD:Folder1:Folder2:Folder3:File.ext"

How can you get the directory in which the file is?

How can you easily get the path of one directory up "HD:Folder1:Folder2:"

What about 2 directories up?

I feel like those are basic and simple questions, but I would really like to understand how I am supposed to deal with them in order to b efficient in my script.

Thank you in advance for your insights,

Guillaume
