If you're using OS X 10.4 (Tiger), you can hide the password:

display dialog "Please enter your password:" default answer "" with hidden
answer
set thePassword to text returned of result

I requires the same for MAC 10.3.9.

This feature was added in the new Standard additions available with 10.4.

It is not surprising that it is not available in 10.3.9.

If I remember well there is such a feature available in Smile or with the Satimage Osax.

Smile only.
