Andrew,

There is a bug in quicktime which shows itself when you try to crop and scale at the same time. I reported this to apple a couple of years ago without anything coming of it. The only thing I can suggest is making a temporary uncompressed tiff file after your crop and then open the temp file and doing the scaling on that. The reason I suggest TIFF uncompressed is that it should be quite quick for quicktime to dump the image data and then read the data in again.

I apologize for you having to do this workaround, I have done a workaround when rendering to a graphic document but it slows things down under certain conditions and it didn't seem worth it to do the workaround when exporting from a graphic importer.
