It's based what I've seen and read and experienced. I mean, just follow these lists and you'll find enough plaintive pleas from those who've run aground on one rock or another. You can only bluff it so long before you get caught out. I'm not saying folks shouldn't do this, mind; bodgery definitely has its place (a.k.a. 'worse is [sometimes] better'). Although it would save them quite a bit of trouble later if they at least knew exactly what they were getting themselves into, and how to get out again before it gets too dangerous.
Folks can get themselves into the most awful messes when hubris and naivety outstrips knowledge and experience. Plus, the bigger and more ambitious they become, the harder they'll crash when it does go wrong. Nothing's more unfortunate than digging oneself into a very deep, dark hole without even being _aware_ that this is what you're doing. By the time you do finally feel the soil trickling down your neck it's already far too late.
The phenomenon is not remotely unique to AppleScript, it's just as true of other platforms. Look at all the corporate IT projects that turn into complete messes and collapse; underneath you'll often find 'professional' developers with exactly the same problems - and these are folks who are _supposed_ to know this stuff. Go onto any professional developer forum and ask them, and they'll tell you the same story. Heck, it's not even programming: drive a car or use a chainsaw without proper instruction or protection and you'll soon have a lot more to worry about than a mere segfault or two!

Of course; that's what I said. Users finally feel like they're truly in charge of their computers. It's a great feeling, and usually more than compensates for the odd bit of minor blood loss. Besides, selective memory is a handy thing. :)
