Wow.  Why didn't I think of that?  I could even tail -f it in real time.   Can't believe it didn't occur to me.  Thanks.

>From what I've seen about TextCommands, it's a separate app  that I'd have to fire up and then tell to log message; that's not really an improvement over 'do shell script "echo"' when I'm trying to minimize the impact of the debugging logic on the running app.  Although its formatting capabilities do seem handy to have around.
