My 2 cents worth, it's all about OPTIONS! Steve said it a few years
ago. Mac OS X gives it to them.
Apple now has potentially 4 suppliers for chips now. [definitely 3]
Freescale
IBM
intel
AMD
This is great. how many times have they been left without a good
supply of new chips when they need them to compete? I can think of
many times.
My guess is that they may never completely switch the whole product
line. They may never go at all. It's all about options though. If the
G6 came out tomorrow on a smaller die for half the cost and 3 times
the performance, why would they go to intel?
Apple now has Options. The cat is out of the bag. They can support
many different processors. They know how to do it. They could go to
the Power5 if they wanted to. Do you think they will abandon PowerPC
code? No, not yet. Maybe never. G5s today still outperform intel
chips. They may in the future too.
Praise them we have options.
Praise them they made it fairly easy to make a universal binary.
Praise them for foreshadowing [use xcode, use xcode, use xcode].
Praise them for not locking us into a whole [dead end].
Personally, i like PowerPC over intel. Long run, I like what works,
and if Apple has seen the roadmaps, then they must know something we
don't, or they are trying to lock us into DRM more than we already
are. But hey, they are a business.
my 2 cents worth, people don't know how to react. it's a good thing
Apple has more options now.
Buy AAPL now while it's cheap =) and get's cheaper.

PS, steve jobs, if you read this... keep up the good work. also,
please don't stifle the usability of the platform anymore. it gets in
the way of productivity.
