This most recent experience is indicative of why I invariably decide not to stick it out -- It turns out that AppleScript isn't in fact the right tool for the job. And to date I've never found it to be, just given my orbit. But I think that it's interesting that around 10 different AS developers responded to my posting about sync'ing source trees. I know that I wasn't actually asking for help -- and I certainly wasn't looking to contract for help. But none of the suggested solutions sent to me actually did what I needed done. Maybe there is an as-yet-unwritten script that could do the job. But I'm left with the impression that developing that mythical script most likely involves more engineering effort than it's worth. Then when I consider the performance issues, the lack of cross-platform support, etc... I'm not saying that there is no suitable role for AS -- there obviously is. But my "job" and interests have never intersected with a problem for which AS was the right tool.
The point of my last posting is that I don't believe end consumers are likely to find enough value in getting to know Automator to justify their efforts in learning it. Indeed I believe that Automator and the way that Apple is promoting it might actually be another example of how the wrong technology can intimidate people, cause them to doubt themselves and turn them into technophobes. The worst example of this phenomenon in my mind has always been Windows.
But what do I know. It would only take you a few weeks, you know, if you decided to actually learn it instead of walking away every time...
