I feel your pain.
I was in the same frame of mind until I took one of the classes from
TecSoft. Those two days changed my AppleScript life.
Books are great, lists are great, I rely on both heavily. But until you have
an experienced coach/teacher beside you and guiding you with real world
examples, your progress will never be all it can be.
Take a professional class as soon as you can. It opened up a whole new world
for me I never even knew was possible.
