As Paul correctly notes, dat ol' debil Nebel has commented on this in the
past. From my personal collection of Nebel's Revelations, May 2, 2003:


"Incidentally, the fact that "POSIX path" is only documented to work on
file and alias objects. The fact that it works on strings is a bug,
but it's not one that we'll ever fix in AppleScript 1.x, since
obviously people are relying on it."

I continue to stand by that statement. My answer to M. Neuberg would be "both (b) and (d), but it will remain for the foreseeable future."
