Who says it's essential? To an application developer, it might be. To an application scripter, it's not. [1] The definition of 'essential' is entirely dependent on context. There's a lot more to this world than C language, you know. For example, traditional scripting languages like sh and bash hide a heck of a lot of low-level stuff, but I don't think anyone would claim those weren't for 'developers'.
