Michelle has it right. You need to add the word "file" in the open command.

   open file {FILEPATH} with LF translation

The intent is to force a coercion to type alias. Don't ask why that isn't automatic.

You might also learn about the bbedit tool which can be used from Terminal or a do shell script.
