Try this instead:

set x to output volume of (get volume settings)
set volume 0
delay 10
set volume x


if you put in some beeps

set x to output volume of (get volume settings)
beep
set volume 1
delay 1
beep
delay 1
set volume x
beep

you'll also hear what is going on  :-)
