Since this may be a gotcha: are you aware that you can't have unbalanced quotes, even in a commented section of your script?

That's also true here - though only for comments in (* parentheses *).

Dashed comments containing unbalanced quotes are ignored:

-- this seems to work as a 12" rule

(Perhaps, in the latter case, the compiler just looks for a closing return...)
