Sorry.  I just tried it, and got a blank search window.  Perhaps it's
broken or mis-documented.

FWIW, I tried this:
set query_ to "Safari" as Unicode text
tell application "Finder" to find query_

Whereas in Terminal, 'mdfind Safari' produces muchos results.  Had no
more luck using more complicated query strings including specific
attributes.
