OT: desktop picture modes

Why, oh why, isn't there a "stretch in whichever direction fits the desktop while keeping the aspect ratio" option in the Desktop and Screensaver prefs panel?  Windows has such an option.  All the modern X desktop picture managers have such an option (xsetroot didn't, but then it doesn't do anything but tiling.  But xv did!)    This behavior is so logical it is the default when you use ImageMagick to resize an image; you have to specifically indicate when you want the aspect ratio violated to get exactly the specified target size.

I just don't get it.

That concludes this Special Vent.  We now return you to your regular AppleScript discussion, already in progress.
