After much struggling with folder actions myself, I was finally convinced by
the experts (thanks Shane and Ray) to abandon folder actions and rewrite
everything as stay open scripts with idle handlers. The other thing I did
was set up a new user profile on my Mac that I only use for running scripts.
Just enable the fast user switching option, then have all of your stay open
scripts running under this alternate user. I have found this to be quite
reliable with finder functions as well as Photoshop. Quark does not want to
run this way, probably because of their strict licensing.
Enjoy.

Like I said...system events runs Folder Actions, IIRC. System events is
another application, albeit a faceless one.
