Thanks for all of your ideas. I am going to try locking down the preference pane file and modifing the plist file. The other thing I have been experimenting with is creating a cron job that performs a shell script that does a default write to the "com.apple.screensaver..... " file every few minutes. But I have been getting unexpected results.

I still think there should be an easy apple script answer : )

Well thanks again!
Happy Apple Scripting

I've done this...you just have to edit the appropriate .plist file. I can't remember which one. Hrmmm... (Side note...I have this nagging problem with the desktop pref pane, where my {stretch, center, etc.} menu list disappears, don't even have a pulldown)

(path to "pref" as Unicode text) & "com.apple.desktop.plist"

try changing your setting from stretch to center, then do a search for the last modified file (modified today, visiblity both invisible and visible) and you will have a few to browse. Just look for the proper key. I believe proper values are 'stretch', 'center', 'tile'.

In case it helps, these are the settings I have here for both System Preferences and the .plist file (against 'Placement'). As Jake suggests, it's worth checking the settings on your own system.

System Prefs : pList 'Placement'
------------- -----------------
Fill screen : Crop
Stretch to fill screen : FillScreen
Center : Centered
Tile : Tiled
