You can "set active layer of layout window 1 to targetLayer" or just set the
text frame's "item layer" property at creation time.

Not in CS; they were introduced in CS2. There, the best method is to use the
"apply object style" command.

Stop using spread view:
tell document 1
set ruler origin of view preferences to page origin
end tell
